You would not even consider the prospect of not having health insurance on members of your family. If you need annual checkups, regular shots for the kids, or that occasional unfortunate trip to the emergency room, you are very thankful that you have health insurance for your family members.

But considering that, is it so strange to think of getting a pet health insurance policy for Rover or Whiskers, who are for all intents and purposes, genuine members of your family as well? These days, the aspect of having a pet health insurance program for your dog or cat or whatever pet you have is not only not strange, it is something that money-conscious consumers are looking at more frequently, since this is something that is saving money for consumers who love their pets.

Think about it – your dog or cat is like a member of your family. You talk to them, they give you unquestioned love in return, but how closely do you watch their health? Do you take them to the vet for annual checkups, or is the only time they see the vet is when they need some kind of emergency health care or that worms or rabies booster shot? If you are like the vast majority of people, your answer is the latter, and you rarely if ever take your pet dog or pet cat to the vet unless there is obviously something wrong with them. And like with people, by the time a problem becomes “obvious”, it is far too late to take any kind of effective preventive measures to make sure a minor problem does not escalate into a major and perhaps life-threatening problem.

Pet health insurance programs come in a variety of types and are available through separate companies and may also be offered by your regular vet. You can usually decide what kind and how much coverage to provide for your pet. At the most basic level, a policy would cover regular checkups and shots, while some of the more comprehensive insurance policies would also cover elective and non-elective surgeries, overnight stays, and sometimes may even cover extended stays at a pet boarding house.

The benefit of having a pet health insurance policy is that these are all covered, and depending on the policy you elect to get, may not even have a deductible, or the deductible amount would be very minor. Even if you get a policy with a deductible, the cost savings over paying each time for each and every procedure is dramatic, plus your pet will be healthier because you will not hesitate to take them to the vet to have something checked out if it appears something may be wrong with them. In the long run, you will have saved money and your pet will be healthier without being a major strain on your wallet.

While pet health care insurance may seem like something that only movie stars get for their Hollywood pets, pet health insurance is becoming more mainstream and is being offered for very reasonable prices. If your pet is really a part of your family as most dogs and cats and other pets are, this is something you may want to look into for the long-term enjoyment of having your pet around as part of your family.

Traveling with your pet can be a very fun experience. What better way for you and your loyal companion to explore new surroundings and adventures? Now before anyone takes a trip they should be well prepared. Since pets can not do preparations for themselves, you will have to do it for your pet. Here is some general advice and tips you should know before you take your pet along on a trip.

Check Your Pet’s Condition.

You should be aware of your pet’s physical condition before traveling. You should go to your veterinarian to check on your pet. Make sure your pet has all the necessary vaccinations and health certificates. Pets that are sick, pregnant, too young or old shouldn’t be taken on a trip, and you should instead consider a pet sitter when you leave.

Driving in a Car

When you have your pet in a car, you should have it in a carrier or a pet seatbelt. Don’t allow your pet to stick its head out of the window. Besides the possibility of being hit by something, your pet can become carsick. If the weather is hot, you should have the air conditioning on.

When you drive, you should take several breaks to let your pet go to the bathroom. Never let your pet stay unattended for long periods of time in the car alone, even in a shaded area (the shade will move over time). The car might over-heat and dehydrate your pet.

You should not let your pet loose when traveling. The pet might run into traffic, get lost, etc.

Things to Bring for Your Pet

* Pet Food – You should feed your pet the brand you usually feed it, and avoid suddenly changing the diet. So if you are unsure where you are going will have the brand, bring some food.

* Bring Water – Bring about two – three gallons of water

* Two leashes and a extra collar

* Photograph of pet – There has been times when pets became lost when traveling with their owners. You should also bring a description of your pet. These will help greatly if unfortunately your pet becomes lost.

* Pet toys

* First aid kits

* Pet comb/brush

The general advice in this article will be helpful to anyone who wants to travel with his or her pet.

Who hasn’t tasted a fruitcake? If you have browsed through a holiday gift display in your local department store, you have most certainly seen a fruitcake or two in the offering. A fruitcake is almost always included on a holiday dessert menu and can usually be found tucked away in a corner at a holiday office party. Chances are, you will find yourself presented with this sticky sweet fruity confection at some point during the holiday season. But what makes the hearty sweet cake so popular? Fruitcake is not at all a modern concoction, but rather, dates back to the early medieval period when the cooks in rich families began experimenting with sweet breads. Old World cooks would hoard their most expensive cooking ingredients so they could be combined into a particularly special treat for the holidays. The basic ingredients include the finest wheat flour, white sugar, eggs, sweet butter, and exotic dried fruits. Certain sweet breads might also contain rich fruit filling such as almond paste, which is known as marzipan. In Germany, the fruitcake is known as Stollen, and is credited to the city of Dresden. A traditional Stollen is oblong in shape, with each end tapered and a ridge running down the middle. It contains raisins, currants, rum or brandy, candied peels and almonds. The Stollen is first baked, then melted butter is brushed on and sugar is sprinkled, then additional fruit pieces are sprinkled over the finished loaf. In New Orleans, the fruitcake is called King Cake and is traditionally served as a Mardi Gras treat. Although similar in its ingredients to the traditional Christmas fruitcake, the Twelfth Night cake originated before Christian times and was developed from ancient Arab recipes. It contains a basic yeast-based brioche and fruits and nuts. The cook often adds a dried bean or coin to the cake batter so it can discovered by one lucky person who will enjoy good fortune throughout the year. Regardless of what it is called, the fruitcake is known as an international symbol of holiday abundance and tradition. It has been said that the fruitcake lives forever, and there are a number of anecdotal stories of fruit cakes being passed on from one generation to the next. An article appeared in the New York Times on Christmas Day 1983, written by a man who claimed to have inherited a fruitcake baked by a relative in 1794 as a gift for George Washington, but the President thought the cake was inappropriate and refused the Christmas gift. It is a tradition in some families to pass a traveling fruticake back and forth between themselves, with each family “babysitting” the cake for a year until it is passed on. In Anglo countries, the traditional holiday fruit cake may be served on Christmas Eve by a family member dressed in a Santa Costume, making the evening both traditional and memorable. Because of its deep cultural roots that span hundreds of years, the fruitcake will undoubtedly remain a symbol of holiday abundance for many generations to come.

One of the author’s favorite holiday traditions is to serve a Christmas fruitcake and eggnog after the gifts have been opened on Christmas morning. To make the day more festive, she dresses in a traditional Mrs. Santa dress on Christmas Day.

At every turning point in life, a person will stand at the crossroads and say, “Am I ready to take this step? Is it right for me?” It’s no different when the choice before you is whether or not to enter an assisted living home. More than likely, you’ve been in the same home for several years, and both the idea of packing up and leaving or continuing to pay rising taxes, mortgage payments, and maintenance costs seem impossible. Here’s an easy guide to determine if an assisted living home might be the choice you’re looking for and the decision that’s right for you.

Consider privacy and community. Throughout our whole lives, there is an interplay between privacy and community; naturally we are impelled to be part of a community because human interaction gives us so much enjoyment, laughter, emotional stability, love, friendship and human warmth. There is an element of surprise with other people where you never know what each new day will bring as your emotional connections deepen and grow, but contrasting that is the need for privacy. Especially while we are raising our families, we want space, privacy and room of one’s own. An assisted living home gives you community in spades; you’re embedded in a pre-established community that will welcome you in and is designed to inspire and delight you. You will have privacy and independence, but it isn’t, admittedly, quite the same as living on your own acre or two in the middle of nowhere.

That does, however, segue into a discussion on care and maintenance. When you are raising a family or are a young person with your own home, it’s no trouble to care for it on your own. You don’t need expensive services to do your work for you, from clearing trees to shoveling the driveway; you can do all that yourself. As we grow older, however, these basic upkeep chores become more physically taxing and potentially dangerous. Can you risk falling while you shovel snow? Are you able to rake leaves, chop a tree, and haul wood, leaves, or debris? Do you have the stamina to clean a whole house? Do you have the disposable income to replace the roof in the next few years? Home maintenance cannot only be physically dangerous but financially weighty as well, as you have to consider that you will need extra funds to maintain your home in the future. In an assisted living home, this is all taken care of, and inside the house you can have all the space you want, without any additional space that is a burden to care for.

Another consideration is health and security. If you are living on your own or have physical limitations, you should strongly consider the benefits of choosing an assisted living home. There are medical staff members constantly on call, and in the event of a fall, heart attack, or stroke, the shortened response time can mean the difference between life and death. It’s a huge benefit having medical staff on hand to look after you whenever you need it without having to drive miles to the doctor. Beyond that, you are in a secured, gated community with a security guard posted at all times to look after you and respond to any issues you may have.

Finally, consider whether or not you are feeling fulfilled in your present situation. Often once the family leaves, we are left with fewer things to fill our days, which is not exactly the situation we envision for retirement. In an assisted living home you have access to a huge variety of classes, courses, and creative pursuits, from painting to writing and crafts like woodworking and sculpture. Learn Italian – and then maybe travel to Italy with your new friends to try it out!

An assisted living home can be an incredibly fulfilling opportunity that looks after your comfort, health, and security so that you don’t have to spend your time worrying about it. If you think an assisted living home is for you, look in your area for local opportunities.

Andy West is a writer on a variety of topics, including elderly living. Many home care services are available to you when you choose to live in an assisted living home.

Summer is here and the time is right for dancing in the streets. Well, maybe not, if you have young children under their supervision. But that does not mean you can not have a great vacation with children. In many ways, leisure time with children is more meaningful and rewarding than a week at the beach without them could ever be. The first rule of thumb for planning any family adventure is finding out what works for the whole family. Normally, I'm not saying that having children should hold back from doing things you enjoy doing. For the UN-final misery of his fellow passengers, we carry our babies in 12 hours travel by plane across the world where we sleep in her lap while we ate gourmet food long. We refuse to let their existence tiny ruin our plans, and often do not vomit or even break things. But now they are older and have their own opinions and desires, we must admit that things are more complicated. Here are some things we've learned along the way: Traveling with Babies Babies are cheap and extremely portable. Pushing a stroller is like having a perpetual shopping cart, where you can also store excess clothing, shopping and even a sandwich and a bottle of wine. Babies remind you that you need a nap and provide a wonderful reason to stop and sit in a park. They change the pace of a holiday in a positive way if you can appreciate. As a parent, I traveled with a period of five months and four years in San Francisco to New York. Everyone treated me as if I had made the most heroic effort of my life and I certainly did not play for my troubles when I met my wife at the other end. Your mileage may vary but I have always found that the horrors of traveling with children so exaggerated, even when traveling alone. The fact of the matter is that during this period of "Life with babies," which is in the area of the baby and can do little nervous in the same manner as if it were a crisis that had to endure outside paternity. Even standing in a fourth plane over the Pacific, to what I remember as hours of holding a crying baby on the teeth or congestion, I've never regretted bringing our children on a journey. Carefully plan travel with babies, however, make sure you have enough diapers and formula, which is never as easy as you think it will be available. And think twice about African safaris or any indication "that there is to see the adventures on a Harley." Surprisingly, large cities make a good holiday with small children because they often can walk around different places, pasting them in strollers. New York, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago are the big cities that offer walking holidays much to do just wandering from one place to another on foot. Unfortunately, most other U.S. cities are too widespread to go in this direction.

Paul Banas was looking for a business idea that would allow him the flexibility to spend time with his family. Paul Banas is a founder of http://www.greatdad.com – a leading source of experience, recommendations, inspiration and advice for dads – delivered from the male perspective.
